GPON ONT OMCI vs TR069 vs U2000 vs XML
ONT Management
GPON terminals are controlled and monitored through specific protocols, namely the Optical Network Terminal Management and Control Interface (OMCI), Extensible Markup Language (XML), or Technical Report 069 (TR069).
The OMCI protocol, as defined by ITU-T G.984.4, is utilized for managing optical network terminals (ONTs) within a GPON system. Huawei ONTs adhere to the OMCI standard.
OMCI messages are exchanged between an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) and an ONT through a dedicated Permanent Virtual Channel (PVC) in Asychronous Transfer Mode (ATM) or a GPON Encapsulation Mode (GEM) port.
The primary function of the OMCI protocol is to oversee and provide Operations and Maintenance (O&M) functionalities for the ONT.
Extensible Markup Language (XML) serves as a textual format facilitating communication between devices. Within the Huawei FTTx system, the iManager U2000 Unified Network Management System (U2000) employs XML for the management of Optical Network Terminals (ONTs).
XML, in this context, serves as a management mode extension from Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (OAM), addresing the absence of definitions for certain services such as voice and Layer 3 gateway services in OAM.
Technical Report 069 (TR069) is a network management protocol established by the DSL Forum, where TR069's full name is CPE WAN Management Protocol (CWMP).
CPE stands for customer premises equipment, and WAN stands for wide area network. TR069 introduces a novel network management structure, encompassing mangement models, interaction interfaces, and fundamental management parameters. Within this structure, the management server acts as an Auto-Configuration Server (ACS), overseeing the management of Customer Premises Equipment (CPE).
Communication between the ACS and CPE occurs through the use of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), with the ACS functioning as an HTTP server and the CPE as a client. Management operations are executed through XML-based remote procedure calls (RPC).
Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) are categorized into three types:
Bridge Type: This type of ONT functions primarily as a bridge, facilitating the passage of data between the optical network and the customer's premises network. It focuses on data transmission without incorporating additional voice or gateway functionalities.
Bridge+Voice Type: In this category, the ONT not only serves as a bridge for data transmission but also includes voice functionality. This type allows for voice communication over the optical network in addition to data transfer.
Gateway Type: The Gateway Type ONT goes beyond data and voice capabilities by acting as a comprehensive gateway. It manages the connection between the optical network and the customer's premises network, handling both data and voice services while potentialy offering additional features such as routing and network management.
These distinctions in ONT types allow service providers and users to choose devices that align with their specific requirements, whether focused on basic data transfer, voice communication, or comprehensive gateway functionalities.
Solution
Each GPON terminal management solution, based on different types of terminal management protocols, offers unique service management scopes. Here are the GPON terminal management solutions provided for each type of ONT:
OMCI+U2000 Solution:
Advantages: This solution, combining the Optical Network Terminal Management and Control Interface (OMCI) protocol with the iManager U2000 Unified Network Management System, provides a comprehensive and reliable approach to managing GPON terminals. It is well-suited for various ONT types.
Disadvantages: While effective, it may lack some advanced functionalties present in other solutions.
Recommendation: Suitable for general GPON terminal management needs and applicable across different ONT types.
OMCI+U2000+XML Solution:
Advantages: Integrating Extensible Markup Language (XML) into the OMCI+U2000 solution enhances its flexibility, especially in managing diverse services and configurations. XML allows for versatile message interaction between devices.
Disadvantages: The added complexity of XML may require additional resources for implementation and maintenance.
Recommendation: Ideal for environments where advanced customization and adaptability are crucial, and XML-based communication is preferred.
OMCI+U2000+TR069 Solution:
Advantages: Combining OMCI with U2000 and Technical Report 069 (TR069) provides a robust solution with standardized network management protocols. TR069, also known as CPE WAN Management Protocol, extends the management capabilities to a wide range of customer premises equipment.
Disadvantages: Implementation complexity may be higher compared to simpler solutions.
Recommendation: Recomended for scenarios where standardized and extended network management capabilities are required, especially for ONTs with diverse service needs.
