Exploring OSN 9800 RTU license
As we know some functions or features of OSN 9800 board are controlled by license, such as OSN 9800 board TNV8T404Q01-R1 requires RTU license to activate every 100G QSFP28 port. You may guess TNV8T404Q06-R1 here “R1” represents the tributary board including RTU license? Actually, this simple question relates to a deeper logic: where is the OSN 9800 license bound to? to the board itself, to the OSN 9800 device, or to the iMaster NCE?
In this blog, we will take OSN 9800 board TNV8T404 as an example to illustrate board RTU license truth.
The TNV8T404 board is Huawei OSN 9800 4*100G Tributary Board (QSFP28) with two variants: TNV8T404Q01 and TNV8T404Q06. From Huawei specification document, the two variants are interchangeable and completely substitute for each other, without any requirement for version upgrade or logical board creation. You can refer to the following Table 1 List of TNV8T404 board variants, knowing item No.3 with part number 03033GKC and No. 4 with part number 03034AQU are the same, interchangeable. Therefore, it’s easy to find that item No.1 and No. 2 including R1 are the same, too. So what is the difference between TNV8T404Q01-R1/TNV8T404Q06-R1 and TNV8T404Q01/TNV8T404Q06?
Table 1 List of TNV8T404 board variants
No. | PN. | Model | Description |
1 | 03059701 | TNV8T404Q01-R1 | 4*100G Tributary Service Processing Board, QSFP28, including four 100G client-side ports with RTU enabled |
2 | 03050CPJ | TNV8T404Q06-R1 | |
3 | 03033GKC | TNV8T404Q01 | 4*100G Tributary Service Processing Board, QSFP28 |
4 | 03034AQU | TNV8T404Q06 |
From the above table, it's easy to understand that TNV8T404 including the suffix R1 with the description "four 100G client-side ports with RTU enabled" corresponds to NSDRTUQ01 in the Table 2 OSN9800 RTU License, while TNV8T404 excluding suffix R1 has no such RTU description.
Table 2 OSN9800 RTU License
Name | Description | Remarks |
LNSDRTUQ01 | Client Port Enable RTU for 100G QSFP Port |
When ports are used as tributary ports, by default, no tributary port can be used on the board. One RTU item is required for every 100G QSFP28 port. |
LNSDRTUQ02 | Client Port Enable RTU for 40G QSFP Port |
By default, no client-side port can be used on the board. One RTU item is required for every client-side 40G/50G QSFP port. |
LNSDQSFPP01 | Line Port Enable RTU for 100G QSFP Port |
When ports are used as line ports , by default, no line port can be used on the board. One RTU item is required for every 100G QSFP28 port. |
We can't help but think whether TNV8T404 has suffix R1 or not may determine the existence of RTU license, or in other words OSN 9800 RTU license is related to the board itself. If you really think like this, you fall into the misleading trap.
By testing OSN9800 and iMaster NCE in our laboratory, we finally got the OSN 9800 board RTU license truth: OSN9800 transmission board licenses should be enabled on iMaster NCE, it's not attached to the board itself or OSN 9800 equipment. That is to say, whether TNV8T404 has the suffix R1 or not has no relation to the RTU license.
Instead, Right To Use (RTU) is used to authorize hardware capabilities in installments, such as capacities(port rate), ports(number of ports), and cross-connect degrees(dimensions of WSS boards). RTU is a license for the use of hardware resources.
Furthermore, Huawei transmission equipment management feature is all controlled by Huawei OmniSight-T license. For example, the cross-connect capacity, supported service types, and FD function of the product. If you need certain management feature, you need separately buy OmniSight-T license resource.
So you may wonder what is the differences among the NMS license, OmniSight-T, and RTU?
- NMS license
The NMS license is used to authorize various functions of the NMS software. For example, NCE-T can manage the type, quantity, and validity period of WDM NEs.
- OmniSight-T
The OmniSight-T is a device license file. The transport device management feature is controlled by the OmniSight-T license.
- RTU
The RTU is a special type of OminiSight-T. On NCE, RTUs are displayed in the form of OminiSight-T.
