What is the difference between ONU and ONT? 22 Oct, 2025. Posted by:XPONSHOP

This blog will discuss the difference between ONU and ONT.

What Is an ONT

An optical network terminal (ONT) is a device that provides a network for home users. It offers high-speed Internet access, IPTV, voice, and Wi-Fi services.

ONT vs. ONU

An ONT can be regarded as an optical network unit (ONU), but it is a part of an ONU in a strict sense.

The difference is that an ONT is an optical network terminal and is located at the user end. An ONU is an optical network unit, and there may be another network between the ONU and the user end. For example, a gateway device with an xDSL or Ethernet port can be connected to an ONU, and then connected to a network terminal.

Position on a Network
An ONT is usually at a user's home. It is connected to a fiber access network, and various Internet access devices are connected to this ONT.

ONT Types

ONTs are classified into the following types based on their functions: Bridge ONTs, Gateway ONTs,  and 10G PON ONTs.

A bridge ONT is only responsible for transparent transmission and provides users with Internet access and IPTV channels. You can access the Internet only after successfully dialing up on your devices such as a router or PC. Some bridge ONTs also support the voice function and can be connected to telephones.

You can enjoy Wi-Fi after connecting a wireless router to a bridge ONT.

Mainstream products: Nokia G-010G-P, ZTE F601, EchoLife HG8010H, EchoLife HG8240H5, EchoLife HG8040H5

Unlike a bridge ONT, a gateway ONT can automatically allocate IP addresses for routing, and you do not need to dial-up to connect to the Internet. Some gateway ONTs also provide dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz & 5 GHz) to support wireless access.

Mainstream products: ZTE F670L, Huawei OptiXstar HG8145X6, Huawei OptiXstar HG8245X6, EchoLife HG8245W5-6T, EchoLife HG8245W5-8T

The user-side rate of a 10G PON ONT can reach up to 1000 Mbit/s, meeting requirements of home users on bandwidth-hungry services such as 4K/8K HD video, AR/VR, home cloud, and video calls. It can also provide private line access services of up to 10 Gbit/s.
